Introduction to Sunburst Clocks

Sunburst clocks became one of the most recognisable decorative forms of mid-20th century interior design. The radiating star or sun motif had earlier historical roots but was widely revived in the 1940s and 1950s as part of modern interior decoration. These clocks combined sculptural wall art with practical function and became a defining feature of many mid-century interiors.

Description of the Clock

The clock is built around a circular centre with a radiating frame of carved wooden rays forming the classic sunburst design. The rays taper outward and are arranged at varying lengths, creating the energetic star shape.

The frame has been finished in a textured gilt surface with darker shading along the edges of the rays. Around the dial is a stepped circular surround which visually anchors the centre against the dramatic radiating form.

The dial itself is simple and functional with Arabic numerals and black hands, marked “8 Days” and “Swiss Made”, indicating a mechanical eight day movement. This type of Swiss movement was widely used in European decorative clocks during the mid-20th century.

Condition

There is  wear to the gilt finish and small losses to the edges of some rays. The dial and surround show light age related patina, overall it is in good decorative condition.

Please note the clock has not been tested and its working order cannot be guaranteed
