The Essentials
Description
This is a working wooden duck decoy, likely made in France around 1900, with its corded anchor weight still attached. The bird was cut from a thick board and given a separately carved head, black paint and a long ochre bill.
The maker used a few deep cuts to mark the wings, feathers and forked tail, keeping the design bold enough to work across open water. Its heavy weight would have held the decoy in place among a group of floating birds while the hunter waited nearby.
