Introduction to British ingot jewellery and Silver Jubilee hallmarks
Ingot pendants like this grew out of a long British habit of treating hallmarks as decoration in their own right. In 1977 the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II added another layer of meaning, as the assay offices introduced a special portrait punch of the Queen that could be struck alongside the normal marks for that year, turning otherwise simple bars into compact commemorative pieces.
Description of the pendant
The pendant is a slim rectangular ingot of solid sterling silver with flat faces and gently chamfered sides. The reverse is left plain and smooth. The front face carries a neat vertical line of punches, starting with the sponsor’s mark ER in a rounded rectangle, followed by the Sheffield town mark of a rose, the lion passant for sterling standard and the date letter C for 1977.
Beneath these sits a small oval cameo head of Queen Elizabeth II, the special Silver Jubilee commemorative mark used only in that year. Together they confirm the pendant as a seventies Sheffield issue in fine silver, made to celebrate twenty five years of the Queen’s reign and offering a very direct visual link between monarch, metal and moment in time.
Condition
The silver shows light surface wear. Overall the ingot remains in good wearable condition with clear hallmarks and a sound suspension ring.
Why You Should Buy
