Introduction to John Miller A.R.P.S

John Miller A.R.P.S was a mid-20th century British photographer recognised by the Royal Photographic Society for the quality of his work. Active in the 1950s, he produced signed black-and-white prints that combined professional studio technique with a sharp eye for composition. His photographs from 1955 reflect the post-war period of British photography, when fine printing, lighting control, and strong tonal contrast were hallmarks of the medium.

Description of the Photograph

This is a large-format black-and-white portrait showing a man in profile, captured with controlled lighting that emphasises the sharp lines of his features and the texture of his beard and hair. The sitter wears a houndstooth jacket over a collared shirt and tie, with the composition carefully balancing light and shadow across his face and clothing.

The image is a gelatin silver print, presented on its original mount and signed “John Miller” in pencil beneath the photograph. An embossed stamp of the Royal Photographic Society marks it as an Associate print dated 1955, with the photographer’s studio details also present verso.

Condition

The print itself is in good condition with tonal clarity and surface stability. The mount has some light spotting and small signs of age but remains structurally sound overall.
