Introduction to 18th-century British topographical engravings

In the mid-1700s, Samuel and Nathaniel Buck set out to capture the ruins and monuments of Britain before they disappeared. Their work became one of the most influential documentary series of its time, offering a meticulous and poetic survey of national heritage.

Description of the print

This large-format architectural view shows the northwest elevation of Llandaff Cathedral and the adjoining bishop’s palace, as it appeared in the early 18th century. Drawn with crisp linear clarity and subtle hand-applied colour, the print combines precision with a certain romantic sparseness. The foreground includes a rural setting, the winding River Taff, and a text panel detailing the church's foundation and storm damage.

The print is labelled "Publish'd according to Act of Parliament March 25th 1741" along the lower edge, confirming the original plate's origin. This is a later strike from that same copper plate, housed in a clean modern glazed frame.

Condition
There is mild foxing visible within the image, consistent with age, but no tears or losses. The frame is modern and clean, with intact hanging fixtures and no structural damage.

Why You Should Buy
