The Essentials
Description
A large Georgian copper measure, probably used for grain, malt or seed in a farm, mill or maltings. The thumb loop and lower rest helped control the vessel when it was lifted and tipped full.
The handle is strengthened from the foot upwards by a flat iron spine, taking the strain from years of repeated use. It was made when grain and other dry goods were routinely measured out by volume in bushels, pecks and gallons.
