Description

Mashals were Persian lighting stands made to carry a separate oil reservoir or large candle at the top. By the 19th century their surfaces could become extraordinarily detailed, and Qajar metalworkers used exactly this combination of figures, animals, calligraphy and tightly worked scrolling foliage.

The body is crowded with courtly figures, hunters, birds and animals amongst pierced flowers and foliage, broken up by large calligraphic medallions. The symmetrical roundels mirrored devotional calligraphy and may include an invocation of Imam Ali.
