Description

This Persian aftaba was made to pour water over the hands for washing, hospitality and ritual cleansing. It has a flattened body, tall baluster neck and long rising spout.

The copper was covered with tin to create its silvery surface, then engraved by hand with animals among foliage on one face and a broad scrolling plant design on the other.

By family repute it was presented as a diplomatic gift during the 1967 coronation celebrations of Mohammad Reza Shah and Farah Pahlavi, by which point it had already been an antique for decades.
