The Essentials
Description
This 18th-century Syrian drinking cup was made under Ottoman rule, probably in Damascus, with turquoise enamel laid over a copper body. Large Arabic calligraphy fills the central panels, divided by exposed copper lines and framed by scrolling borders.
Crescent medallions link the decoration to the Ottoman world, while a knotted rosette forms the centre of one roundel. It survives as a personal fragment of Ottoman Syrian life, made for the hand as much as for the eye.
