Description
An Ottoman brass divit made as a portable writing set for a professional scribe, calligrapher or official. The long compartment held reed pens, while the attached well carried the ink needed to write away from a fixed desk.
The inkwell is formed as a heavy faceted block with a hinged shell-shaped cover, paired with a second hinged cap for the pen compartment. Its leaves, flowerheads and geometric bands were cut directly into the brass, with every line following the hand of the maker.
