The Essentials
Description
This is an 18th century Islamic enamelled copper pharmacy jar, probably from the Syrian Damascus or Persianate metalwork tradition. The rounded copper body is set with turquoise enamel panels filled with Arabic calligraphy, with traces of gilding, or possibly edged gold, still visible around the lower decoration.
The rolled rim has a groove below the opening, the feature associated with jars once covered with paper or skin and tied in place with cord. The arched handle gives the piece its stronger form, turning the calligraphic enamel body into a small vessel made to be carried. A fantastically rare and incredible piece.
