Description
This is a 19th-century Indo-Persian kashkul, an alms vessel carried by wandering Sufi dervishes. A deer moves through large flowering plants across the panel, raised from the copper sheet and finished with tightly chased lines through the fur, petals and leaves.
Such bowls received food, money and drink, while their emptiness expressed voluntary poverty and the clearing away of worldly desire. The ship-like form referred to a journey across the sea of mystical knowledge, so the vessel held both a dervish’s daily provisions and the central idea of the life he had chosen.
