The Essentials
Description
A Thai bronze head of Buddha Shakyamuni, made in the Ayutthaya style, a tradition of Buddhist sculpture that developed in central Thailand. The face has the distinctive high, curved eyebrows, with carefully outlined eyes and pupils, a prominent nose and a slight smile, features found on surviving Ayutthaya bronzes.
The hair has been worked into hundreds of small, raised curls, rising to a tall flame finial, which represents the Buddha's enlightenment. His elongated earlobes recall his former life as a prince, while the hollow neck collar is a feature also found on historical Buddha heads cast separately for attachment to larger statues.
