Description
This is a Burmese painted bronze temple gong from the 19th century, decorated across the front with court and performance figures. The scene is arranged around the raised central boss, with dancers, musicians and attendants shown below a pavilion-like setting.
The decoration to the Burmese pwe performance, where music, dance, theatre and festival life belonged together.
The dark ground, gilt traces and small painted figures give it the look of an object made to be seen as well as heard. Hung on a wall, the front shows a complete little stage built around the sound of the gong.
