Chinese and Japanese craftsmanship defined the standard for beauty and technical skill across Asia for over a thousand years. This collection brings together porcelain, bronze, wood, cloisonné and enamel that show the balance of discipline and artistry which made these cultures central to the history of decorative art.
The pieces here span pre-Ming, Ming and Qing ceramics through to Japanese bronzes, lacquer, netsuke, cloisonné and Meiji metalwork. We select examples for integrity of form, colour and finish; signs of honest age; and workmanship that still holds presence today. Look for the brushwork and glaze depth of imperial porcelain, the crisp casting of a bronze figure, or the translucence of a finely applied enamel.
