The Essentials
Description
A Japanese lacquered netsuke depicting a laughing karako, carrying a small kettle, likely an early 20th century example. Karako were popular subjects in Japanese art, associated with wishes for healthy children and long life.
The robe is covered in a repeating sayagata pattern, a traditional Japanese design associated with good fortune and lasting prosperity, with small blue floral decorations and red lacquer borders. The two openings on the back were designed for threading a cord, allowing the netsuke to secure a pouch or inro to the sash of a kimono.
