  • Late Meiji period, circa 1880–1900

  • Dragon, phoenix, kirin and tortoise forming the Four Divine Creatures
  • Good antique condition with surface wear and natural oxidation

Description

This substantial Meiji bronze vase brings together the dragon, phoenix, kirin and tortoise, the group known as the Four Divine Creatures. Each is given its own high-relief composition around the body, turning what first appears to be dense decoration into a carefully planned group of auspicious mythical animals.

The background is covered with a fine archaistic pattern based on the angular thunder and dragon decoration of ancient Chinese bronzes. Beast-head loop handles, ruyi clouds, bat motifs and the repeating shoulder border continue the same Chinese-inspired design across the neck and body, with the raised bronze details standing out against the dark patinated surface.
