Introduction to Chinese Rootwood Furniture
Rootwood furniture is closely associated with the scholar’s studio, where selected natural roots were shaped to support prized objects. Hongmu, a dense rosewood used from the late Qing into the Republic period, was prized for its rich colour and ability to take a high polish. These stands combine organic form with careful hand finishing to create functional sculpture.
Description of the Rootwood Stand
Intertwined root elements rise to a thick lobed top platform, while a smaller shelf is set lower within the structure to create a stepped arrangement for display. Three splayed branch feet form a stable tripod and the open framework leaves pierced voids between the members so the piece reads light and vertical.
The top and lower shelves are finished smooth and polished, contrasting with hand-worked roots that retain knots, burls, and natural growth. Zoomorphic masks appear to emerge from the upper supports with rounded muzzles and raised eyes, adding a sculptural accent suited to staging a vase, censer, or scholar’s object.
Condition
Some scattered knocks and surface rubbing to high points. Stable overall and ready for display.
