The Essentials
Description
A Chinese cloisonné enamel stacking box, with three separate sections that fit together on a raised pedestal. The decoration continues across each section, with a complete floral medallion worked into the underside of one compartment.
The raised form recalls the ancient Chinese dou, a vessel traditionally used to present food during ceremonies, while the decoration features stylised lotus and treasure flowers surrounded by scrolling foliage. The lotus has long symbolised purity in Buddhist art, and the continuous flowering stems carry the idea of growth and good fortune continuing without end.
