The Essentials
Description
A late Victorian dress cane with an unusually extensively worked gold-filled pommel, covered in scrolling leaves and tightly engraved Rococo Revival ornament. The decoration continues around the full handle, with polished scrollwork set against densely cut darker grounds and a smooth crown left above.
A tiny pair of initials, apparently JL, is worked discreetly into the lower engraving and may relate to the maker or engraver. Gold-filled pommel canes of this type were being produced by specialist American jewellery firms during the late nineteenth century, combining elaborate metalwork with the simple black ebonised shafts fashionable for gentleman's dress canes.
