The Essentials
Description
A portable botany display made for the National Museum of Wales Museum Schools Service, designed to take real museum teaching material into classrooms across Wales. Preserved examples of crustaceous, fruticose and foliose lichens are combined with a Mount Everest vegetation chart, a photograph of lichens growing on stone tiles and a diagram explaining the fungus and alga structure of a lichen.
The Schools Service was founded in 1949 and developed a substantial collection of material for schools, with its Botany department publishing a catalogue of loan material in 1957. The original Museum Schools Service plaque and self-contained carrying case survive as part of an approach to education which put museum specimens directly in front of pupils beyond the galleries in Cardiff.
