The Essentials
Description
This late Victorian riding crop is topped by a finely modelled fox head, with the white-metal mount below worked all the way around with hares, birds and scrolling foliage.
The decoration carries the hunting theme across the whole handle and gives a good sense of the sort of sporting equipment being made for the hunting field in the late 19th century.
English firms such as Swaine & Adeney, Brigg and G. & J. Zair were producing riding and hunting crops of this type at the time, and this is exceptional example is likely one of theirs.
