Introduction to Victorian Tavern Glass
In 19th century Britain beer and ale were commonly served in standardised measures such as the half pint in public houses and taverns. Glass drinking vessels in Britain were still hand-blown in the mid-19th century with characteristic blown features and pontil scars.
Description of the Tankard
The tankard has a compact barrel form with a pronounced collar through the mid section, a thick stepped base, and a substantial applied handle with visible joins where it meets the body.
The glass is clear with small bubbles and slight movement in the body, and it is finished with a hinged pewter lid with a simple thumbpiece, giving it that familiar Victorian tavern glass look.
This is the sort of object that sits at the junction between workshop tradition and mass demand. Practical pub tankards were made to be handled daily, with the snapped pontil underneath acting as a quiet little signature of how it was finished in the glasshouse.
Condition
General age wear to the glass and pewter, consistent with use and handling. Overall it is in good condition.
