Introduction to Atlas Globe Drinks Cabinets
Atlas globe drinks cabinets became popular in Italy during the mid-20th century, blending classical mythological themes with practical storage design. These cabinets reproduce early map styles and often feature hidden compartments for bottles and glassware, combining decorative appeal with functional craftsmanship.
Description of the Cabinet
This Italian drinks cabinet features a hinged globe decorated with a 17th-century map reproduction, opening to reveal a concealed drinks compartment with shaped wooden bottle and glass holders. The map design includes Latin place names such as "Tartaria," "Arabia," and "Africa," alongside decorative cartouches and mythical sea creatures.
The interior of the globe is richly decorated with vibrant classical allegorical scenes and mythological symbolism. The supporting figure of Atlas is cast from a resin or composite material and finished to resemble aged bronze, with detailed facial features and muscular form. The figure kneels on a stained and varnished wooden plinth with a stepped moulded design for stability.
The globe opens via a brass-coloured hinge mechanism, and the base offers a balanced, classical presentation suitable for display and functional use.
Condition
General surface wear with scuffing to the printed globe and minor cracking to the lacquer; structurally stable and functional.
Why You Should Buy
It offers decorative impact and hidden storage in a design that brings classical mythology to life.
