Introduction to Ercol Furniture

Founded in 1920 by Italian-born designer Lucian Ercolani, Ercol became one of Britain’s most celebrated furniture makers. Based in High Wycombe, the company combined traditional English forms with modernist principles, using native woods such as elm and beech. By the mid-20th century, Ercol’s Windsor range had become iconic, known for its simplicity, functionality, and lasting quality.

Description of the Armchairs

This set of four Ercol 1877A Windsor dining armchairs dates to 1960, as indicated by the underside brand mark. Each chair features the classic Windsor hoop back with seven slender spindles and elegantly curved bentwood arms, mounted on saddle-shaped elm seats. The legs, turned from beech, taper gracefully and are joined by stretchers for strength and balance.

The natural beauty of elm grain is visible across the seat surfaces, with warm medium-brown tones enhanced by age. The branded underside stamp reads “B.S.L.F 1960 2056,” confirming date and production authenticity.

Condition

The chairs are structurally strong. Surfaces show minor scratches, wear to edges, and an aged patina consistent with daily use. Some small splitting. Good overall condition for their age.

Why You Should Buy

These Ercol chairs bring together design pedigree, comfort, and timeless appeal, making them a versatile choice for both modern and traditional interiors.
