The Essentials
Description
These two French folk art jugs were made together around 1900, using pieces of old household china and glass to completely remake the surface of each vessel.
Blue and white transferware sits alongside floral ceramics, coloured porcelain and moulded aqua glass, with the fragments arranged differently across each jug.
This type of work is known in France as pique-assiette, where broken crockery was reused by setting it into plaster or composition, with examples from the period also finished in bronze paint.
